Supporting Youth Exiting Care to Achieve Post-secondary Success

Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa

Youth in care can face challenges that often lead to a drop in graduation rates, as they navigate exit from care amid housing and financial pressures.

Youth in care can face challenges that often lead to a drop in graduation rates, as they navigate exit from care amid housing and financial pressures. High school completion and post-secondary enrollment suffer and those who make it are often overwhelmed with new pressures in their first semester of college or university.

To tackle these challenges, this initiative by the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa offers intensified senior-year coaching for credits, structured support for post-secondary application and aid, and dedicated coordinators to enhance student stability.

Northpine Foundation invested in this initiative to support increased number of youth from the care system in attaining high school graduation and boosting post-secondary enrollment and persistence once they do. If successful, this will mean more youth converting high school wins into economic stability, independence and a sustainable, fulfilling life.
