Beneath the surface of one of Canada's most resilient and community-minded cities is a cycle of generational poverty. The cause (and effect) is often a forced social assistance dependency, because the barriers to education, employment and retaining a job are stubborn, interconnected, and rarely addressed together.

About This Portfolio

Winnipeg has some of the highest rates of social assistance dependency in Canada. Behind those numbers are caregivers, newcomers, families navigating a maze of interconnected challenges: low literacy, limited English proficiency, lack of childcare, gaps in employment history, and no clear path forward. If even one of them is not addressed, progress seems impossible. When they're tackled together, futures change.

Employment and education aren't just economic outcomes, they are the foundation on which sustainable, fulfilling lives are built. And when a parent finds their footing, the impact reaches their children and breaks the cycle for the generations to come.

Impact Team

We are a small, dedicated team of people, with our impact leaders embedded in the areas they serve, working to change what's possible for our communities across Canada.

Our Approach

The most powerful investment you can make in a child's future is in their parents. In Winnipeg, we back organizations creating clear pathways into meaningful employment and post-secondary education, and offering supports that make both possible. Trusted organizations that understand the obstacles that could disrupt these transitions and address them holistically.

What We Fund

  • Employment pathways that address the real barriers to getting and keeping a job
  • Post-secondary access and persistence supports, particularly for adult learners returning to education
  • Childcare and childminding solutions that make participation in employment and education possible
  • Integrated approaches that address more than one barrier at a time
  • Non-profits, charities and for-profits at any stage, with clear evidence of their impact
